That is correct, devices need to be in warranty. Some models are eligible for a subscription-only model:

It is possible to reactivate warranty on ‘out-of-warranty’ products via Peplink SmartCare.
This way you can access it through InControl 2 again.
SmartCare is more expensive than the normal warranty extension, which is only available for ‘in-warranty’ products.
