If the 20X were capable of gigabit throughput (it’s rated at 900Mbps), it would be an excellent unit for small office / home office where gigabit fiber is available, but cellular failover is highly desired. Support for 2.5Gbps on the WAN port and enough CPU to handle that would be even better. Present CPU speed has kept us from recommending/installing the 20X for clients.
While I don’t disagree that those things would be nice, the reality is that the b20x is a fantastically well priced/featured entry level model.
We use tons of them in small branch offices, retail deployments etc. The vast majority of these don’t have 1Gb WAN links, and the few that do have them generally because it was as cost effective as something slower, and the 900Mb vs 1Gb discrepancy is immaterial.
2.5Gb WAN & firewall capability for that just isn’t realistic at this point point at this point in time. There are bigger units with that sort of capability if required.
The br1 pro 5g would fit your needs.
The B20X is rated for 900Mbps, but can handle 1Gbps connection just fine. As most connections cap out around 920-940Mbps when talking about 1Gbps physical connection due to overhead on the physical connection.
We are running quite a few on 1Gbps fiber connections that run fine and with the Speedtest we can now automatically run with 8.3.0 firmware, you can see it actually reaches the 920-940Mbps regularly.
There is B20X Pro on the horizon, no specific details yet apart from that it’s going to be one tier higher than the B20X, so am expecting the same SoC as the BR1 Pro 5G/CAT20 in it.
I cannot say for certain, as Peplink doesn’t specify SoC used, but it seems the B20X is based on the IPQ-4018/4019 SoC, the BR1 Pro (5G/CAT20) look to be based on IPQ-6018.
For a test of such a setup, I’m using a BR1 Pro LTE 20 (the 5G aspect wasn’t overly needed). But the 20X is at an attractive price point, to be sure.
Sounds like the 20X Pro will be the ideal unit for the deployments I do. That would have enough CPU power for the full speed of the line (which I do understand isn’t always achievable) but also some CPU left over for SpeedFusion.
According to 8.3.0 Release Notes they have now officially upped the throughput to 1Gbps for the 20X.
