Antenna MAX S (HW3) – Reverse Polarity Protection on DC Input?

Hi all,

I’m planning to install an Antenna MAX S HW3 enclosure (Peplink router + Starlink Mini) powered via the DC direct-wire input from our vehicle’s battery system.

The datasheet doesn’t mention any reverse polarity protection for the DC input (wire connector). Could someone from Peplink or the community confirm:

  1. Does the Antenna MAX S HW3 (or the internal power module/PoE splitter used inside it) have built-in reverse polarity protection on the DC input?
  2. If not, is there a recommended inline protection component (fuse/diode) for DC installations?

This would help avoid damaging the router/Starlink Mini in case of a wiring mistake during install.

Hi,

when you will get Antenna MAX S (HW3), look for a leaflet with barcode. This will link you to installation guide with all details.

Below are answers to your questions:

1. Does the Antenna MAX S HW3 (or the internal power module/PoE splitter used inside it) have built-in reverse polarity protection on the DC input?
The antenna MAX S itself, doesn’t have build it reverse polarity protection. I also checked Peplink PoE Splitter (Splitter MAX S) and it also doesn’t reverse polarity protection.

2. If not, is there a recommended inline protection component (fuse/diode) for DC installations?
Yes, diode probably would be the best option. Just make sure it is rated for your at least 15A if you will be using 12V battery and also ideally I would choose Schottky diode.

I would also like to suggest considering reverse polarity protection as a hardware feature in future revisions. This additional protection could help prevent damage caused by accidental wiring mistakes or other power-related issues that may occur in vehicle installations, especially during battery replacement, maintenance, or jump-start procedures.

FWIW, we usually use 6a10 rectifier diode connected across the supply, protected by a fast-acting fuse – in the classic “crowbar” design. Helps the diagnostic process too. ;<)
