Access to Local Computers via PEPVPN

Hello - I am a home user that is not a IT professional, but I am pretty functional when it comes to computers. I have 2 locations that I have connected using Pepvpn on my 2 peplink routers. I have read several responses to the same question on the forum, and have tried different configurations, but I can’t gain access to my remote machines when using the vpn. I am able to access the remote router successfully, but I suspect that the remote firewall is blocking access to the remote machines. As I mentioned I tried changing the inbound firewall rules without success. If someone could give me instructions for configuring this, I would greatly appreciate it. I need to access files on one of the remote machines, and they are too large for chrome remote desktop and google drive keeps giving me a network error.

Here are the IP addresses of my peplink routers:

192.168.3.1 (local peplink router) is trying to access 192.168.2.1 (remote peplink router)

Please keep in mind that I am not an IT professional.

Thank you!!!

  • In your vlan configuration “inter vlan communication” needs to be enabled.
  • The communication between vlans via pepvpn is an internal routing, you have to allow the communication in the internal firewall section.

Thanks. Inter-VLAN routing is enabled on both routers. Any other thoughs?

Thanks!!

So given you can get from your machine, to the remote peplink address (192.168.2.1) I would think it is safe to assume that your local pc is working correctly.

is the remote machine plugged into the lan of the remote peplin/pepwave device and getting DHCP from the peplink.

The reason I ask is that a common issue that people miss is that the remote device gateway needs to be using the peplink as its gateway. If the gateway is set to be another device then the traffic will be sent to the wrong router.

I’m assuming above that the remote machine you are trying to access is a pc/mac which would auto configure a gateway. If it is another router or a switch these often need a config manually added to allow access via a router (the peplink).

Another option is that there might be a firewall filter configured on the remote device which allows local access only and prevents access from “foreign addresses”. This would mean you need to add a rule to allow the 192.168.2.1/24 network.
