Update the BR1 Mini and TST Mini to Retain Functionality after the 3G Sunset

Major wireless carriers are retiring their 3G networks. If you have one of the following devices, you’ll need to update to 8.1.3 above to ensure they keep working:

  • Transit Mini (TST-MINI-LTE-F-T-PRM)

FAQ 1 - How does the 3G sunset affect me?

Devices that are not sunset-compatible may not connect to the carrier’s networks.

FAQ 2 - What can I prepare?

Update the devices listed above to Firmware 8.1.3 or above.

FAQ 3 - What are the 3G sunset dates?

All 3G networks will shut down by the end of 2022, with some already phasing them out. One major US network will shut down the 3G network by December 31, 2021.

Why exactly is this firmware update needed to maintain functionality with the 3G shutdown? I didn’t see an explanation in the release notes.

What about MAX-BR1 HW1 LTE devices that can only run firmware 6.3.5?

BR1 LTE HW1 doesn’t have the compatability issue with the carriers 3G sunset.

What exactly is the compatibility issue?
I only ask because I have somewhere around 1500 to upgrade.
They’re all managed through InControl but I’ve had quite a few not come back online after pushing a firmware update and need to send someone to power cycle.
Thanks

@1wheeler1 This is related to the module inside the unit. The module needs to be set into a correct usage setting. If not, the module may not connect to the carrier.

This is the reason why a firmware upgrade needed to have the logic to set the module into the correct usage setting to connect.

About your other devices being offline, if the power cycle doesn’t make the devices back online, please file a ticket for us to follow up on that.

Does this still just apply to the three units above?
Latest Peplink 3G sunset announcement didn’t refer just those models.
