I bought the 20x “multi-wan” thinking I could use my DSL from the Wan port and Starlink from another Wan port, but I am not seeing a way to do this without buying the dsl module and Cneturylink (my provider), states it is not compatible, even though the technology is.
SHould I have bought a different model?
What can I do to get this working?
Also, My Starlink is ~150mbps and the DSL is like 20-30, but the DSL has a better ping time/latency. I want it to use the Starlink for the upload and DL speeds and the DSL as more of the backup and for stability of the connection.
You get a virtual WAN on LAN with a care plan, which is included for the first year. So you can use one of the LAN ports as another WAN port.
Also the Starlink units I’ve seen have WiFi, so you could use the WiFi WAN feature to connect.
There’s also the USB port. You might find either the DSL or the Starlink has a USB port, which does CDC-Ethernet, and that would connect. Or you can get a USB-Ethernet dongle, they start at about $10.
Just a note, to my knowledge, the throughput of the virtual WAN is shared with other LAN ports, while the true WAN port has a theoretical 1Gbps for itself. And the USB port is also limited by the USB implementation though I am not sure what it is exactly, but it is also less than 1Gbps. In either cases this is way more than your two WANs (DSL and Starlink). Still you may want to put the Starlink on the main WAN which is the fastest, and then use a virtual WAN or USB dongle for the slower DSL. That is just theory, though, testing will tell you, especially for latency.
How are you measuring the latency? Did you test superficial latency (to the upstream router) or overall latency to big important sites? Did you just test idle latency or latency under load? The latter is particularly important given that “bufferbloat” can be a problem.
